Zac Baird’s U19 Basketball Match Report
Helsby High School U19s vs. Childwall College (Liverpool) Mersey Tigers Academy

Helsby only had one game this week against a strong Childwall College Mersey Tigers Academy side. Due to an educational visit to Liverpool University and injury Helsby were missing their two biggest inside players Jack Bamber and James Crosby as well as U15 big man Arwel Goulbourne.

Due to these missing players there was a change in the Helsby starting five, going for a smaller quicker approach focusing on high intensity defence with James Faint, Sean Martin and Cameron Mackay on the perimeter and Patrick Phelan and Zac Baird adapting to inside roles. Due to every player on the floor being able to handle the ball it seemed like this was a good change against Childwall who are renowned for their pressure defence and stealing the ball in the backcourt.

Senior Citizens Christmas Party (14th December 2011)

Senior Citizens Christmas PartyHelsby High School pupils have once again hosted senior citizens from Helsby, Frodsham and the surrounding villages at their annual Christmas party. Once the guests had been collected and brought to the school by minibus, they were greeted by year 11 prefects and Health and Social Care student who served home-made mince pies and kept them busy with a Christmas quiz. The invitees were entertained by members of the school’s senior band and the junior choir and enjoyed the festive sing-a-long of some well-known carols.

The school drama group gave a very humorous performance of their version of “the Twelve Days of Christmas” before several games of prize bingo were won and a light lunch prepared and served by the GCSE Food group, was enjoyed. There was just time to draw the raffle for some wonderful prizes donated by local businesses and staff and pupils of Helsby High School before it was time to board the minibuses home. Everyone left extremely happily with a hamper of goodies, also donated by pupils of the school.

The party is eagerly anticipated by the senior citizens and pupils alike as friendships are renewed each year and much fun and enjoyment is had by all. Mrs Neal, Assistant Headteacher said: “The Senior Citizens Christmas Party is a wonderful event, which is enjoyed and thoroughly appreciated every year by members of our local community. The party is organised and hosted by a great team effort in school and it is very gratifying to see the obvious pleasure had by our guests and to hear the overwhelmingly positive comments from them as they depart.”

End of Term Message – Christmas 2011

in School News | By Mr S Edwards,

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope that you all enjoy a really lovely Christmas break and that you find some time to relax.  I would like to thank you for your on-going help and support over 2011 and I would like to wish you well for 2012.

As I am sure you are aware, this has been a very busy term and the last two weeks have been particularly so.  Last Thursday the school held a superb Christmas Carol Service at Chester Cathedral.  It was a real pleasure to see and hear over 130 young people giving such fantastic and wide ranging performances.  It made all associated with the school extremely proud.  Our musicians have been particularly busy over the last three weeks as they have also given performances at The Brindley Theatre, Helsby Hillside Primary School, the Frodsham Festival, the party held in school for the senior citizens and at the school’s Awards Evening.

Chris Martin’s U14 Basketball Match Report
Helsby v Canon Slade

1st Quarter

The game started with a quick basket from Ross Frewin which gained the lead for Helsby. A minute later Joe Wilkinson got fouled and went to the line, unfortunately missing both the free throws, but he bounced back and made two lay-ups from fast breaks to make the score 6-0 in the next two offences. Chris Martin then managed to score back to back baskets to take the lead to 10-4. Due to some more fast breaks and excellent teamwork Helsby got six more unanswered points to make an 8-0 run. At the end of the quarter Cellan Goulbourne scored his first two points and Joe Wilkinson finished with the last basket; the score was now 20-13.

End of Term Reward Assemblies (Christmas 2011)

in School News | By Mr S Edwards,

As we approach the end of 2011 it was time to reward some of those students who have worked so hard.

Year 8 Rewards AssemblyAs part of the schools new Rewards System we will be rewarding individual achievements.  During the last assembly of the year Mrs Clark joined the Heads of Year to present prizes to a number of students who have won some very special awards. These included the Unsung Hero, Highest Achiever and Best Effort awards. The students were asked to come to the front of the hall to receive their awards which were gift vouchers for VUE and WHSmiths.  Bronze certificates were also presented to a number of students who had also earned 75 merits since September, which is a fantastic achievement!

The rewards assembly for Year 8 was extra special for all involved. The newly formed Year 8 bands, who call themselves ‘Reaction’, played a Nirvana song whilst the Year 8’s all arrived.  They were fantastic with all the students and Form Tutors giving them a massive cheer when they had finished the track.

Can we take this opportunity to congratulate all pupils who have made the launch of the new Rewards System a huge success. Over 25,000 merits have been issued since its launch in September!

Well done!

Year 12 Physics visit to ‘BALL PACKAGING’ Deeside Plant, November 2011

in School News | By Mr S Edwards,

Visit to 'BALL PACKAGING' Deeside Plant“We visited the Ball Packaging factory as part of our AS Physics course.  Ball Produce cans for almost all the major alcoholic and soft drink beverage manufacturers in the UK.  The factory we visited was specifically for producing can ends, the top section of the can.  We learnt how the factory could produce 1900 can ends a second, equating to 23 million a day.  We were told about the measures taken to remain efficient and ensure that the products were made with precision.

We looked at the ring pull mechanism and discovered that the scored section which is to be ‘popped’ had to be accurate to around 17 microns.  Considering that a human hair is 70 microns, this was a great insight into the level of precision needed.

We enjoyed a talk on the processes used in the factory courtesy of the Plant Manager, Kev and the Production Manager, Anthony.  We were also given a free can of pepsi, a mouse mat, a sticker and all the can ends we could wish for!

Overall I found the experience to be very rewarding and it gave us a great insight into the way products that we take for granted are manufactured.”

U19 v Neston High (Home) 7/12/11

Helsby had two games this week, Monday against Ellesmere Port Catholic High School U19s and Wednesday against Neston High School U19s.

Monday’s game against Ellesmere Port was not the best performance from a young Helsby team made up of three U15s, three U16s and four U17s. Due to an inexplicable lack of confidence and motivation Helsby went down in the first quarter 11-27. The second quarter saw an improved performance, drawing the quarter 19-19 against a strong Ellesmere Port side but still 16 down at the half.

Basketball Match Report: Helsby High U16s v Wright Robinson Sports College

Basketball Match Report

Helsby High U16s v Wright Robinson Sports College (Manchester)

 (Home) – 6/12/2011

The game started slowly with no points scored until the 3rd minute then Helsby seemed to come to life hitting shots and getting to the basket at will. Great pressure on the full court defence lead to numerous steals by Helsby’s Joe Smith and Zac Baird setting up Cameron Mackay with easy baskets.

Winning the first Quarter 23-15 Helsby went into the 2nd quarter with their heads held high and playing with confidence which led to another scoring run through superb shooting, strength getting to the rim and teamwork! Helsby struggled most on defence in this quarter allowing Manchester Magic Guard Nathan Hardacre (4) to make several shots from beyond the arc. However, Helsby still managed to win the quarter 24-17. This meant the score was 47-32 going into half time.
