Learning Resource Centre
Helsby High School Learning Resource Centre’s mission is to encourage learning through providing staff and students with the appropriate resources, information and support they need.
The Learning Resource Centre is a warm and inspiring space where pupils feel safe and stimulated. It offers space for approximately 50 pupils who are welcome to come and complete their homework, revise for exams, and foster a love of life-long learning outside the classroom through reading.
In the Learning Resource Centre there is a calm classroom space where pupils can study. There is also an IT suite which contains 14 computers and a class set of 30 iPads. There is a separate 6th form area where pupils from years 12 and 13 are encouraged to revise in silence surrounded by books and information which supports their curriculum.
The fiction section of the library contains around 2,000 books which are constantly being updated. The non-fiction sets out to support any curriculum needs the pupils have and asks pupils to further read around their subjects, developing their ability to learn independently. There is a wide variety of study and revision guides, as well as a fantastic careers section where pupils can get an insight into the world of work.
All Key stage 3 classes attend one ‘library lesson’ a week, developing a love of reading and an understanding of the importance of knowledge. Pupils from all year groups are invited to attend the Learning Resource Centre before school, during break and lunchtime, and also after school at the new ‘Learning Live’ after school club. The library is open from 7:45am where there will be prefects and teachers available to help with homework or any other curriculum enquiries.
As part of the new after school club – ‘Learning Live’, the library will now be open until 16:00. This will allow pupils to stay behind after school and catch up on any homework they need to do, revision for exams, or classwork they may have missed. Alternatively it will provide pupils with a quiet and happy space where they can come and read for their own enjoyment.
