Helsby Sixth Form has a new team of Head Students for the forthcoming academic year and the five students have already begun their duties, which include representing the Sixth Form both within the school and out in the wider community.
The students (pictured left to right) told us about their plans for their time in post and their career aspirations:
Bronwen studies English Literature, History, Politics and Art. Bronwen explains, “Studying such subjects has developed my passion for law and I wish to further this interest by studying the subject at university. In my many years at Helsby High School, my teachers have continuously supported me in both my academic studies and my extracurricular activities. This is the reason I became a Head Student. Although the precise details of any future endeavours remain uncertain, while I am a Head Student, I wish to give back to the community that has helped me so much. I believe that by improving the working relationship between teachers and students, we can create a better environment for the facilitation of learning.
Lucy is studying Business, ICT and Sociology and intends to secure a Business/Finance degree apprenticeship. “In addition to receiving a recognised qualification, this will allow me to gain real work experience, develop my skills and hopefully improve my employability. In my role in the Head Student Team, I would like to focus on three relationships: with younger students, with our teachers and with the school’s wider community. Despite these challenging times, it is important that the Head Student Team play an active role in getting to know our younger students, be a voice for them and to help them with any problems or concerns they may have.”
Sarah studies Sociology, Politics and Philosophy and Ethics. “These subject areas have always been of interest to me as I am very passionate about social justice, current affairs, and examining and questioning the information and beliefs that I hold. I am intending to progress to university to study anthropology and international relations, with the intent to continue to get my masters and doctorate in the field of human rights. Within this role I hope to represent the views and opinions of my peers with honesty and integrity and work with the school to achieve the best possible outcomes for everybody at Helsby High School.”
Jess is studying Business, Economics and Psychology and took advantage of the opportunity and support in Year 12 to complete the Certificate in Financial Studies (CEFS). I hope to progress from Sixth Form to university to study Business management with Marketing with a placement year. In the future I aspire to work in business, supporting companies to be more sustainable. As a Head Student, I am hoping to support the students and the local community to become more aware of issues such as Inclusion and Diversity, Sustainability and Resilience in an ever-changing world.
Jaiden is studying Economics, English Language and Geography and has already achieved an AS level in Business and a Level 3 qualification in the CEFS finance course during Year 12. Jaiden plans to study Economics at university. He explains, “I feel honoured to have been chosen to be Head Student and it has been something I have wanted to do since I joined the school. I am excited to accept the opportunities and challenges that will come my way while in this role and aim to set a good example both within the school and within the wider community.
Director of Sixth Form at Helsby High, Ian Duffell added “We are all really looking forward to working with such a talented and enthusiastic team of Head Students. The team are an exceptional group of ambassadors, both for The Sixth Form and for the wider school. They are fortunate to be leading a dedicated wider leadership group of Year 13 students who are taking up roles to support students across the school the in crucial areas such as Mental Health and Charity work. We are proud that our students have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills as well as being to achieve outstanding academic results in Helsby Sixth Form and I know that they will be working hard to support and inspire students throughout the school and in the wider community over the coming months.”
