The first round of the English Schools Track and Field Cup was held this week with competitions taking place all over the country. The two Cheshire events took place at Warrington in the north and Macclesfield in the south.
An understrength Helsby Inter boys (U15) were hoping to repeat their successes of two years ago when following on from winning their Round 1 match they qualified for the North-West Final where victory gave them a place in the National Final where they finished a very creditable 7th.
Despite the cold, damp conditions the Helsby boys got off to a flying start on the track and after 13 of the 25 events were well in the lead with 242 points. Notable performances came from Jacob S who scored 28 points by running 38.0secs in the 300m and Jim E who ran 11.7secs in the 100m to score 26 points for his team. After the changeover the Helsby boys were in the field, the weaker of their two disciplines. In the 12 field events the boys notched another 166 points to give them a total of 408 points, 69 clear of second placed Weaverham. The pick of the athletes here were Josh K with 18 points in the javelin (37.09m) and again Jim E who threw 27.25m in the discus to score 18 points.
In order to be guaranteed a place in the North-West ‘A’ final and a chance to qualify for the National Final however this score also had to beat the winners of the event running simultaneously in Macclesfield. The highest Inter Boys score in Macclesfield was just 329 which means the team will compete in the North-West ‘A’ final at Robin Park Stadium in Wigan next month and a chance to again represent the school at the National Final.
The team were amongst the leading scorers in the North-West so with some athletes still to return to the team after injury together with a lot of hard work in the coming weeks they should be confident of repeating their feat of two years ago.
Also competing at this event for Helsby were the Junior boys (U13), Inter girls and Junior girls teams. These teams finished 3rd (4th), 6th (9th) and 8th (14th) respectively in the Warrington event (figures in brackets are the overall positions in Cheshire).
